When Donna’s husband of nearly 58 years passed away, she was devastated. But she found comfort in knowing her Beatitudes Campus friends and neighbors were nearby to support and check in on her, just as she does for them.

“Without them, I’d have been alone once my kids returned to their own lives out of state,” she said. “When my husband had his first stroke, and we lived in a house, I felt very alone — not as I do here. We’re all here for one another, but also respect each other’s space.”

Donna’s story is one that other older adults can relate to — she’s found safe senior living and a network of support from friends and neighbors who genuinely care for one another. Residents can confidently enjoy their days, knowing resident safety is a priority at Beatitudes Campus. A blend of security measures and safety precautions for older adults provides peace of mind and comfort in our close-knit community.

When a neighbor suggested Donna sign up for Beatitudes Campus’ daily check-in system, she didn’t hesitate. Residents who opt to use the system must press a button as soon as they wake up every morning. The front desk will call to check in if they haven’t done so around noon. If there’s no response, security will do a wellness check on the resident. “This safety feature is reassuring for those of us living alone,” Donna said. “If I forget to push the button, they call to check on me, which is helpful with my unusual sleep schedule.”

With 24/7 gated entry, round-the-clock security, a visitor sign-in system, and in-residence safety pull cords and personal help buttons, Beatitudes Campus promotes senior living safety at every turn.

For residents Jerry and Penny, these features provide reassurance and confidence. “After 40 years in Moon Valley, where we needed an alarm system and security shutters, we now have a secure, welcoming community without the hassle of alarms and shutters,” they said. “Plus, we get to enjoy our view every day without obstruction.”

The couple values the peace of mind of being surrounded by supportive residents. “Moving here, we immediately felt connected to our neighbors, and it’s comforting to know they keep an eye out for us when we’re away.”

Penny and Jerry also know that if they ever need assistance, the campus security makes their rounds frequently and responds promptly. With street-facing cameras on the west and north sides of campus, they feel comfortable walking alone to evening events.

Well-lit walking paths, gardening areas and dog parks spread across Beatitudes Campus’ 27 acres offer spaces for residents to enjoy the outdoors and get to know one another, with the reassurance that help is never far away.

Supporting Senior Safety Through 19NORTH Community Alliance

Situated along Glendale Avenue, Beatitudes Campus lies in the heart of 19NORTH. In this people-focused neighborhood, residents, businesses, schools and organizations come together to make North Phoenix safe, welcoming and walkable.

Driving this vision is the 19NORTH Community Alliance, a grassroots group of leaders — from city officials to local nonprofits — working together to create a neighborhood where people of all ages can thrive. This alliance serves the Montebello and Dunlap Avenues area, from 15th to 23rd Avenue, including Beatitudes Campus.

Donna recently took the light rail into the city with a friend. She hadn’t ridden it in years and was surprised at how much safer it felt than expected. “Many residents feel so safe and comfortable that they rarely leave Beatitudes Campus except for outings on our bus,” she said. “It’s easy to stay in this cocoon, but I think it’s good to step out of our comfort zones occasionally.”

The alliance helps make community life safer and more connected through the Public Safety Collaboration Program, which includes security patrols, a dispatch line, monthly updates, improvements to bus stops, and substance abuse and outreach programs.

You might not see purses as symbols of power, but they’ve always carried weight.

In the ancient Egyptian days, and during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, purses held practical power. Noblemen and traders tied small pouches around their waists to keep valuables like money, while ladies of the Georgian and Regency eras carried reticules. These decorative fabric handbags carried essentials like sewing kits for quick mending and smelling salts for revival after a fainting spell from too-tight corsets.

Then there’s the cinematic power of purses. Indiana Jones used his iconic satchel to transport artifacts, keep his maps and journals safe, and stash his whip. Meanwhile, Mary Poppins’ bottomless magical carpetbag came in handy when children needed to be captivated or when a full-size coatrack, lamp or measuring tape was needed.

And at Beatitudes Campus, there’s the trailblazing and transformative Power of the Purse.

What Is Power of the Purse?

Power of the Purse is our annual fundraiser, celebrating generosity, community spirit and designer handbags. It brings the community together to raise funds, ensuring all our residents can thrive in a place that values dignity, wellness and connection.

Each year, Power of the Purse is a sellout event where generous supporters from across Phoenix come together for an unforgettable evening of delicious cocktails, divine small plates, and the thrill of bidding on new or gently loved designer handbags in our silent and live auctions.

And this year, as we celebrate our 12th annual purse fundraiser, November 10, we commemorate the 60th anniversary of our community’s groundbreaking. In 1964, Beatitudes Campus laid its foundation in Phoenix, and we’re excited to celebrate not only our history, but also our future.

The Many Benefits of the Power of the Purse

Beatitudes Campus is more than just a senior living community — it’s family. Our mission has always been to care for older adults in meaningful ways. With the funds raised from Power of the Purse, we can continue this legacy through life-changing initiatives that directly benefit our residents — from financial aid scholarships to innovative memory care programs.

All the proceeds from the purse fundraiser event go back into our community to help us:

  • Support the resident assistance fund. This provides housing and healthcare scholarships for residents who have outlived their personal assets through no fault of their own. It’s a lifeline for those who need it most.
  • Enhance resident-focused programs. From fitness classes to spiritual and recreational opportunities, our programs are designed to help seniors live life to the fullest.
  • Advance Comfort Matters® dementia care. Our award-winning dementia care program ensures residents living with dementia receive the best quality of care and life possible.

Celebrating 60 Years of Groundbreaking Impact

As we reflect on our 60-year history, we’re reminded of how far we’ve come. What started as a vision in 1964 has grown into a vibrant, caring community impacting the lives of seniors and their families across Phoenix. And as we gear up for our 60th anniversary in 2025 — marking when our first resident moved in — we know that this year’s Power of the Purse will be extra special.

The true power of the purse isn’t just in the handbags we auction, but in the meaningful difference we can make for older adults. Each dollar raised helps ensure Beatitudes Campus can continue to be a place where seniors live, learn and grow boldly and brightly for generations to come.

Your support helps us continue our groundbreaking work in providing the very best for our residents. Visit Power of the Purse to learn more and purchase your tickets for the November 10 event.

Reading enthusiast Margaret was one of the most active participants in her monthly book club meetings. But lately, she’s cupping her hand around her ear, leaning in closer to others to catch more words or looking around the room for visual cues from others’ reactions. The 78-year-old, who took pride in living vibrantly and self-sufficiently, pretended to follow along in the discussions while wondering, “How do I know if I need a hearing aid?”

Though some older adults might view an assistive device as a sign they’re giving in to the aging process, the reality is quite the opposite. Hearing aids can seamlessly blend into daily life while helping you enhance independence and engage socially and interpersonally. Plus, modern hearing aids are more discreet, user-friendly and technologically advanced than ever.

In Margaret’s case, an audiologist’s visit confirmed moderate hearing loss. With her sleek new hearing aids, she felt more engaged and socially connected than she had in months. At the next book club, she heard every word, laugh and gasp. She went from asking herself, “Do I need a hearing aid?” to “I can’t believe I waited this long to have my hearing checked!”

When Should You Get Hearing Aids?

The first step in determining when to get a hearing aid is recognizing the signs of hearing loss. Seniors struggling with hearing tend to do things like nodding along without fully understanding, appearing confused or becoming quieter in conversations. They might misinterpret what’s being said, respond inappropriately or speak louder than necessary. You may notice them watching lips to read them, frowning in frustration or positioning themselves closer to the speaker. If you have a senior loved one who seems withdrawn and is pulling away from social activities, it can also signal that they are having hearing issues.

Here are five indicators of when to get hearing aids:

  1. Frequently asking people to repeat themselves or finding it hard to follow conversations in noisy environments.
  2. Constantly needing to increase the volume on your TV or radio to hear clearly.
  3. Struggling with phone calls and difficulty hearing conversations.
  4. Avoiding social situations because it’s too hard to keep up with conversations.
  5. Tinnitus, or persistent ringing or buzzing in your ears.

What Level of Hearing Loss Requires a Hearing Aid?

Hearing loss is measured in decibels (dB) and categorized into different levels that can help answer the question, “How do I know if I need hearing aids?”

  • Mild hearing loss (26–40 dB): People with mild hearing loss may hear some speech sounds but have difficulty with soft sounds. They might need a hearing aid if they struggle in noisy environments or frequently ask others to repeat themselves.
  • Moderate hearing loss (41–55 dB): With moderate hearing loss, understanding speech becomes challenging, especially in group settings.
  • Moderately severe hearing loss (56–70 dB): Hearing becomes difficult without assistance at this level.
  • Severe hearing loss (71–90 dB): Seniors with severe hearing loss will struggle to hear even loud speech. Hearing aids, possibly in combination with other assistive listening devices, are necessary.
  • Profound hearing loss (91+ dB): Most sounds are inaudible without powerful hearing aids or other assistive devices.

How Long Does It Take To Get a Hearing Aid?

Hearing aids and assistive devices are now more accessible and affordable. Getting one is straightforward but involves several steps to ensure it meets your needs. Here’s a general timeline:

  • Hearing evaluation: The first step is a comprehensive hearing test by an audiologist or hearing specialist to assess your type and degree of hearing loss.
  • Consultation and selection: After the evaluation, the audiologist will help you choose a hearing aid that fits your lifestyle, preferences and budget. You will be surprised at the variety available!
  • Fitting and adjustment: During this appointment, the audiologist will program the hearing aid to match your specific hearing loss and ensure it fits comfortably.
  • Trial period: Most providers offer a 30-to-60-day trial period for hearing aids, allowing adjustments with your audiologist as needed.
  • Follow-up: After the trial period, a follow-up appointment is usually scheduled to make any final adjustments and address any concerns.

Saying Goodbye to Silence

Today’s hearing aids are far superior to the bulky, conspicuous devices of 20 years ago that were a hassle to use and left users self-conscious. Back then, they had poor sound quality, limited customization, no connectivity, constant feedback and required frequent battery changes.

Modern hearing aids are discreet, often virtually invisible, and use digital technology for superior sound quality, noise reduction and personalized settings. Many are Bluetooth-enabled for direct streaming from smartphones and other devices. They feature directional microphones, feedback cancellation, automatic environmental adjustments and rechargeable batteries. Their customizable designs ensure a comfortable fit for every user.

If you or a loved one are experiencing signs of hearing loss and wondering, “Do I need hearing aids?” consider scheduling an evaluation with an audiologist. The American Academy of Audiology can help you find one. Using a hearing aid or assistive device isn’t a sign of defeat; it’s a chance to fully enjoy the sounds of life while living brightly and aging boldly.

Most of us are familiar with how tangible things get better with age. Wines develop more complex flavors and aromas, while aged whiskey often has a smoother, more refined taste than younger varieties. High-quality leather goods soften and develop a unique patina. Jeans become more comfortable as they conform to the shape of your body. Art and collectibles, like vintage toys or coins, gain character and value. Cast iron skillets transform into natural, nonstick wonders that enhance cooking performance. Cheeses, like Parmesan, cheddar and Gouda, mature and develop richer, more intense flavors.

But it’s not only things you can see, taste and touch that get better with age. Life gets better with age — it’s one of the many advantages of getting older. This blog explores things that age well and how Beatitudes Campus residents are getting better with age as they live amplified lives filled with passion and purpose.

Vintage Vibes: Nine Things That Get Better With Time

What gets better with age? Quite a bit, actually! Here’s our top nine list of things that enhance over time.

  1. Wisdom: Time is the ultimate teacher. With every year, we gather more life lessons, insights and experiences, shaping our understanding of the world and guiding our actions with newfound wisdom.
  1. Relationships: Like a fine wine, friendships and relationships mature and deepen with time. Shared experiences and memories create unbreakable bonds, offering support, laughter and companionship through life’s journey.
  1. Confidence: There’s nothing quite like the self-assurance that comes with age. We grow more comfortable in our own skin, embracing our strengths and quirks with confidence and pride.
  1. Memories: Our memories become cherished treasures as the years roll on. They remind us of our life’s journey, each a snapshot of the moments that shaped us.
  1. Patience and resilience: Life teaches us patience, showing that good things take time. Along the way, we also learn resilience, bouncing back stronger from setbacks and challenges.
  1. Perspective and self-awareness: With age comes a broader perspective. We gain the ability to see situations from different angles, leading to greater understanding. We also become more attuned to our own strengths, weaknesses and values, enhancing personal growth.
  1. Skills: Practice makes perfect, especially when it involves the pursuit of knowledge. Over time, we hone our lifelong learning skills in various areas, whether it’s trying a new recipe, learning a language, playing a musical instrument or mastering a sport.
  1. Gratitude: The older we get, the more we appreciate the people, experiences and blessings in our lives. A deeper sense of gratitude enriches our days and brings us joy.
  1. You: Yes, you top our list of things that age well. With every passing year, seniors become more refined, resilient and remarkable versions of themselves, so remember to embrace the beauty of aging.

Things That Age Well: Beatitudes Campus Residents

At Beatitudes Campus, residents get better with age and appreciate the journey of growing older on their terms. They’ve created a true community where they’re living brightly and aging boldly while enriching the lives of their friends, neighbors and members of the Phoenix community.

Resident Kathy runs the foreign books section for the Volunteer Nonprofit Service Association Used Book Sale, and she has donated several books to our Health Care Center. Always up for a challenge, she recently stretched her comfort zone with a trip to Mongolia and a rafting adventure with a friend down the Colorado River.

As dedicated gardening group members, Melissa and Mike poured their hearts into helping research and redesign our campus Community Garden, creating a beautiful, welcoming and functional space for all to enjoy.

Hobbs and Marabeth’s support has been invaluable to assisted living residents in Plaza View and others facing cognitive challenges, helping many of them age in place longer and engage in meaningful community activities.

After retiring, Joan embraced a new adventurous spirit by skydiving out of planes, obtaining her concealed carry permit and getting inked up with tattoos.

Judy makes a lasting impact on young lives by mentoring students, serving on the board of a local charter school and sponsoring first-generation college students. Mae has nearly single-handedly crocheted all the prayer shawls for our Life Center, offering comfort and warmth to those in need at hospitals and beyond.

Leading our Cards for Kindness® group, Sandy has been a prolific contributor to the nationwide movement, donating the most cards among Arizona participants. As spring arrives in Arizona, plants and trees cast off dust, pollen and dead foliage, clearing the path for fresh growth. Birds molt, replacing old feathers with vibrant, new plumage. Desert creatures adjust to rising temps by shedding fur, while insects and reptiles shed their exoskeletons and skins as they mature and grow.

Amid this seasonal shedding, Beatitudes Campus resident Phebe Packer experienced her own transformation. The 78-year-old traded her 1,600-square-foot home with a garage for a 1,110-square-foot entrance fee senior apartment in Central Park West.

“I had too much stuff and came to a point in my life where I wanted to shed and move to a smaller place,” she said. “I wanted to be prepared for the years when I have less mobility and make decisions now instead of having decisions forced upon me after I moved.”

For many older adults, who spent decades caring for and living in homes filled with memories and possessions, the idea of living in an apartment can be both daunting and liberating. Phebe’s journey sheds light on apartment living pros and cons and how having less stuff makes room for more retirement freedom and enriching experiences.

When considering rightsizing vs downsizing, Phebe opted for both. She adjusted her space and possessions to better align with current needs, while also reducing the amount and size of stuff she owned.

Clearing the Clutter With Senior Apartment Living

The process of downsizing from a spacious home to rightsizing to a senior apartment wasn’t without challenges. Before moving to Beatitudes, Phebe spent about six months sorting through decades of accumulated possessions.

“My place was packed with stuff. I collected old books and had a lot of family heirlooms, so it was interesting to get in touch with family and see what they wanted,” she recalled. Through the process, Phebe pared down her possessions and found joy in passing on items to appreciative loved ones.

A strategy she recommends is packing items, organizing belongings into categories and storing them in the garage. “By doing that, I was less attached to the stuff because I didn’t see it all of the time and weaned myself off,” she said. With the support of her adult children and a systematic approach to decluttering, Phebe streamlined her possessions and made her move much smoother.

More Freedom, Less Stuff: Apartment Living for Seniors

When considering the pros and cons of apartment living, Phebe wondered if the loss of square footage would feel like a step back. It turns out that rightsizing to an entrance fee apartment at Beatitudes was the best choice.

“My independent living senior apartment is large, with two bedrooms, a den and a balcony,” she said. “It doesn’t feel anywhere near the size of my house, but I don’t miss all my extra stuff and don’t regret my decision whatsoever.”

Phebe was proud to accomplish her downsizing goal and experience the freedom of letting go. “You don’t really know what life is going to be like on campus and what you’re going to need and want to have,” she said. “Just about everybody realizes they still brought too much stuff and goes through a second phase of downsizing when they move here.”

After living in an apartment for the last year, Phebe embraces her new life alongside her toy poodle, Folly. “I had my eyes set on Beatitudes all along because of its reputation for being such a lively community with lots of people involved in multiple activities.”

When she first moved to Phoenix in the 1970s, Phebe lived in the central part of the city so Beatitudes’ size and location also appealed to her. “It’s sort of like coming full circle all these years later,” she said. “I’m shedding more things all the time and minimizing what I need. It’s really a wonderful place, and I’m enjoying more experiences with less stuff.”

Step Into Spring With a Lightened Load and Brighter Future

Phebe’s story offers insight into what it means to relocate to an independent living senior apartment and how it opens up new opportunities for simplicity, revealing the value of living life over owning possessions.

While Phebe was fortunate to have family nearby to assist, other older adults without a support network may feel overwhelmed by weighing pros and cons of living in an apartment after living for years in a large home. Don’t stress about rightsizing to a senior apartment: Beatitudes Campus is by your side to help you navigate the transition.

We have several resource partners to lighten your load and support your moving and downsizing needs, including Simple Setups and S4 Real Estate Group. Additionally, our Move-in Coordinator can provide a comprehensive list of preferred vendors to ensure your move unfolds effortlessly.
