In keeping with our 2024 theme of living confidently, removing obstacles in your path and powering up your retirement, we’re tackling an unwelcome byproduct of the digital age: senior citizen scams. Swindlers are continuously finding new ways to target older adults online, by mail and over the phone, making senior fraud prevention an essential topic for your safety and well-being.

Beatitudes Campus wants to help you outwit the scammers, allowing you to focus less on worrying about them and more on embracing the joys of life, friendship, learning, creativity, self-expression and celebration. In this blog, we’ll explore common senior scams, telltale signs to look for and scam prevention for seniors.

Protect Yourself: Senior Fraud Prevention Tips To Keep Online Scammers at Bay

In the vast world of information and connection are scammers lurking in cyberspace shadows and waiting to pounce on unsuspecting victims. Common online scams include phishing emails, fake websites and social media scams.

Red flags to watch out for online:

  • Unsolicited emails asking for personal information or money
  • Pop-up ads offering unrealistic prizes or rewards
  • Requests to wire money or purchase gift cards as payment
  • Websites with misspellings or poor grammar
  • Social media messages from unfamiliar accounts urging you to click on links or download files

Online scam prevention for seniors:

  • Be wary of unsolicited emails, messages or requests for personal information.
  • Verify the sender’s identity and legitimacy before clicking on links or providing information online.
  • Protect your online accounts with strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication when possible.
  • Ensure your computer, smartphone and other devices have the latest security updates installed to protect against malware and viruses.
  • Trust your instincts and proceed cautiously if something feels off or too good to be true.

While not as common anymore as online fraud, it’s also important to protect seniors from scams that are postal-related. Common mail scams include fake lottery winnings, charity scams and fraudulent investment offers. Remember, legitimate organizations will only ask you to send money or personal information through the mail with proper verification.

Warning signals to pay attention to:

  • Letters or postcards claiming you’ve won a prize or lottery
  • Requests for donations to unfamiliar charities or causes
  • Unsolicited investment offers promising high returns with little risk
  • Letters with urgent or threatening language demanding immediate action

Ways to avoid mail scams:

  • Dispose of old bills, statements and other documents containing personal information by shredding them before recycling or throwing them away.
  • Research the organization or company before responding to mail offers to ensure they are legitimate.
  • Never provide personal or financial information in response to unsolicited mail.
  • If you receive suspicious mail, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or your local post office.

In addition to online and mail, scammers may be on the other end of the phone line, ready to deceive you with smooth talk and false promises. Common phone scams include fake IRS calls, tech support scams and grandparent scams.

Signs you’re being targeted by a phone scam:

  • Calls from unfamiliar numbers claiming to be government agencies or tech support
  • Requests for payment via wire transfer, gift cards or cryptocurrency
  • Threats of legal action or arrest if payment isn’t made immediately
  • Calls from supposed family members or friends in distress asking for money

Tips for avoiding phone scams:

  • If you receive a call from an unfamiliar number or person, don’t answer, or approach cautiously and skeptically.
  • Ask for the caller’s name, organization and contact information, and verify their identity before providing any information or payment.
  • If you suspect a call is a scam, hang up immediately and report it to the FTC or your local authorities.
  • Reduce the number of unsolicited calls you receive by registering your phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry.

Protect Your Loved Ones: What To Do If Your Elderly Parent Is Being Scammed

If you suspect your aging parent is being scammed, there are several steps you can take to help them. Approach the situation gently and talk to your parents about your concerns while listening to their perspectives without judgment. Gather all the information you can about the scam, including any suspicious phone calls, emails or mail they’ve received. You can also contact the bank and/or credit card company to monitor their accounts for unusual activity.

Encourage your loved one to report the scam to the authorities, such as the Federal Trade Commission or local law enforcement. Consider seeking support from a trusted family member, friend or advisor to help navigate the situation. AARP also has resources and helpful articles on how to protect seniors from scams and fraud. Remember, being the victim of elderly scams may make your loved one feel embarrassed or ashamed, so offering them reassurance and understanding is vital throughout the process.

Be in the Know

Shielding yourself from fraud might feel overwhelming but fear not. With the right tools and awareness, you can outsmart scammers and navigate your retirement journey with confidence. At Beatitudes Campus, we’re dedicated to empowering residents with knowledge about scams and fraud to ensure their safety. While we can’t promise foolproof protection, we’re committed to providing resources and support to help you avoid potential pitfalls so you can focus on embracing the world of opportunities awaiting you.

It’s a classic cinematic “meet-cute” story: Boy sees girl while they’re waiting in the lunch line. No one else is around, so they start talking. Boy learns girl lives nearby in a patio home but regrettably forgets to ask her name. Boy goes home, searches the neighborhood phone directory, and miraculously finds the girl on his first attempt. He calls to invite her to dinner, and she accepts.

The “boy and girl” — Beatitudes Campus residents Jerry Eddy and Sharon Watkins — have been together since that fateful day two years ago, waiting for their to-go orders at Buckwald’s. They celebrated their love on Feb. 10 with a pre-Valentine’s Day commitment ceremony surrounded by family and friends. The couple will officially cap off the ceremony — live-streamed for distant loved ones — with a cruise in March.

Maintaining Healthy Relationships

Jerry was married for 57 years, and Sharon was married for 50 years before losing their spouses following long illnesses. They said they would never have met if it weren’t for living at Beatitudes and are grateful to have found love that “has been continuously increasing every day.”

Their story is a testament to the importance of relationships and social connection for seniors and the benefits of relationships in our lives. The couple loves old movies, TV mysteries, live music and dancing. Other residents will often find them cutting a rug during Bearded Lizard jam sessions at Plaza Club or Saturday afternoons at Town Plaza Bistro.

Jerry and Sharon offer advice for singles in retirement communities wanting to find love or companionship: “Don’t just sit in a room alone. Be bold and take advantage of any chance to talk to others, like while waiting for your takeout order. Ask someone if you can sit with them in the Bistro, attend exercise, music or lifelong learning classes.”

why healthy relationships are important

Why Are Healthy Relationships Important?

Healthy relationships — whether romantic or friendly — are a fountain of youth for older adults, offering many benefits. Studies suggest seniors with strong social connections enjoy longer, healthier lives. Friendship and romantic love help keep the mind sharp through engaging conversations and activities, promoting cognitive function as we age. These connections also provide a sense of purpose, whether helping friends or cherishing family moments, giving seniors reasons to embrace each day.

Life has ups and downs, but having someone to lean on is invaluable. Healthy relationships provide emotional support for navigating life’s challenges and are a beacon of light that combats loneliness. Sharing life’s adventures with someone special also adds an extra layer of happiness to daily life.

Bob Morgan and Linda Byers’ love story started at church, where they had known each other for about 15 years. Fate brought them both to Beatitudes, just a month apart in November and December 2019. Life had thrown its challenges their way; Bob’s wife passed away in 2020 after a severe stroke and Linda had lost her husband a decade earlier.

They recognized that their former spouses wouldn’t return and discovered something beautiful together. Bob and Linda found they had more in common than they could have imagined. Their shared interests in church activities, books, theater and movies brought them even closer together.

The couple said every day feels like Valentine’s Day or a Hallmark holiday; they don’t need a special occasion to celebrate their love. “Our advice to other residents: Take advantage to share opportunities with others in the community when they are presented to you. Don’t be afraid to make a commitment.”

“We Wanted To Spend All Our Time Together”

If you ask Joannie Bailey, “Why are relationships important?” she’ll answer, “Happiness!”

She first saw and became friends with her “so friendly” and “very handsome” future second husband, Lowell, years ago at a fitness class where he was an instructor while also teaching at a nearby college.

Both had previously enjoyed 50-year marriages before reconnecting when Joannie was 78 and Lowell was 82. They both still shared a love for fitness; Joannie was a runner, while Lowell was an Arizona Senior Olympics board member.

After learning that Lowell had moved to Beatitudes post-retirement because of the continuing care options offered at the Life Plan community, Joannie expressed interest in visiting. Lowell also was a docent at the Desert Botanical Garden, which Joannie often frequented. Gardening was another shared passion, and she learned Lowell started a community garden at Beatitudes Campus.

While Joannie’s friend was visiting from Boston, Lowell invited them to tour the campus and see the Garden Club’s progress. “What a sight! Raised beds filled the area and green shoots were thriving. It was a work of art.” she said.

Joannie said she would have been happy to leave it at that, but Lowell invited the friends to stay for a drink at The Plaza Club. Some of Beatitudes’ most knowledgeable residents, including Founder Dr. Culver “Bill” Nelson, frequented the campus hotspot.

“We met the crew, talked and told jokes, and Lowell said we had fit right in,” Joannie said. “A week later, he called and hesitantly asked if I would go on a dinner date with him and another couple at Elaine’s Fine Dining at Beatitudes Campus. Would I?! I could hardly wait!”

Lowell was residing at Beatitudes, while Joannie lived in a different community. They soon realized the distance hampered their relationship. “We wanted to spend all our time together. That’s when we realized we were in love and wanted to move in together.”

Shortly after, Lowell proposed, and the couple married in the community garden, where their good friend Bill Nelson officiated. Joannie and Lowell invited the entire campus and nearly everyone attended, meeting their families and friends while enjoying champagne and wedding cake “presented by smiling and thrilled dining services folks.”

While Lowell’s health gradually declined, the continuum of healthcare services he received allowed the couple to stay together until his death two years ago. Like Jerry and Sharon, and Bob and Linda, Joannie encourages older adults to be bold and put themselves out there to find joy.

“Go for the fun and see what happens,” she said. “There are so many events right here on campus. And should you happen to fall in love, there’s no telling the happiness.”

Now that the holiday hustle and bustle is in the rearview mirror, and the calendar has flipped to 2024, it’s time to recharge and hit the gas on a healthy new year filled with fun, fulfillment and fellowship.

A new year reset holds endless possibilities, and with the right mindset, inspiration and practical steps, you can make it your most rewarding and wellness-centered year yet. And we’ve got you covered if you’re wondering how to prepare for the new year or need some New Year resolution ideas. Our first blog of 2024 explores goals for seniors and strategies for living brightly and aging boldly in retirement.

New Year’s Resolutions for Seniors

One of the most effective ways to recharge for the new year and begin your journey toward a gratifying future is to set healthy New Year resolutions. By staying active, simplifying your life, eating well, exploring new adventures and ensuring financial security, you can make 2024 a year of growth, happiness and satisfaction.

  1. Stay in motion. One of the most impactful New Year’s resolutions for seniors is to prioritize physical activity. Regular exercise helps maintain flexibility, strength and overall health. Whether taking daily walks, practicing yoga or participating in a senior fitness class, staying active can significantly improve your quality of life.
  2. Clear the clutter. Simplifying your living space can bring clarity and a sense of renewal. Consider decluttering your home, removing items you no longer need and organizing your belongings. A tidy living space can reduce stress and create a more peaceful environment.
  3. Nourish your body. Healthy New Year resolution ideas for seniors often focus on nutrition. Embrace a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Eating well can boost energy levels, support immune health and help manage chronic conditions.
  4. Journey into the unknown. Don’t let age be a barrier to wandering and discovering. Whether near or far, traveling can provide new experiences, create lasting memories and invigorate your spirit. Plan a trip to a destination you’ve always dreamed of visiting and explore local attractions.
  5. Invest wisely for what lies ahead. Financial security is vital at any age. One way to recharge for the new year is by reviewing your finances and preparing financially for tomorrow. Consider consulting a financial advisor to help you make informed decisions.
  6. Nurture your mind and soul. For a healthy new year, practice mindfulness, engage in hobbies that bring you joy and seek support from your social circle. Reflect on the positive aspects of your life, express appreciation for the people and experiences that enrich your days, and start each day with a thankful heart.
  7. Keep the bonds strong. Building and nurturing relationships can enrich your life in countless ways. Spend more time with loved ones, join social groups or clubs, or engage in community activities.
  8. Open new doors of opportunity. New experiences can ignite your curiosity and zest for life, so challenge yourself to try something new. It could be learning a new language, taking up a creative hobby or attending cultural events.

Approach the new year boldly by plugging into these upcoming events and kickstarting your journey toward a vibrant future at Beatitudes Campus.

Radio host legend Bernard Meltzer advised, “There is no better exercise for your heart than reaching down and helping to lift someone up.” Humanitarian, activist and diplomat Eleanor Roosevelt believed that “Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.” And Aesop, the Greek fabulist and storyteller, said “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” These heartfelt words resonate throughout the year, but they shine brightest around the holidays.

During this time of joy, love and togetherness, there’s something magical about the act of giving back at Christmas. Spreading kindness fills our hearts and reminds us of the true meaning of this special time of year. In this blog, we’ll explore how to give back – from volunteering and making charitable donations to adopting a family in need and assisting in local food banks. These acts of service and ways to give back during the holidays not only bring happiness to others but also have a profound impact on our own lives.

Volunteering: The Gift of Time

Volunteering is one of the most meaningful ways to give back to the community. There’s no shortage of opportunities to get involved, whether serving meals at food banks or homeless shelters, donating and wrapping gifts for children in need, or spending time with cats and dogs at a local animal shelter. Volunteering not only positively impacts the lives of others but also fills us with a sense of purpose and gratitude. It’s a reminder that the season’s true spirit lies in selflessness and compassion.

Many organizations host special events for those seeking volunteer opportunities during the holidays. Local churches, community centers and nonprofit organizations often welcome volunteers to help with holiday-themed projects. And for active seniors wondering how to give back, volunteering can be a fulfilling way to stay engaged and connected with your community.

Explore opportunities on VolunteerMatch, HandsOn Greater Phoenix and the City of Phoenix’s Volunteer PHX portal.

Adopting a Family in Need: Spreading Holiday Magic

Another way to give back during the holidays is by adopting a family in need and providing them gifts, food and essentials to ensure they have a memorable Christmas. This act of kindness can be significant for families with children, or grandparents with grandchildren, as it reinforces the importance of giving back and sharing with others.

Many community organizations and churches facilitate family adoption programs during the holiday season. It’s an opportunity to connect with a family, learn about their needs and make their holidays brighter. You create a lasting impact beyond the holiday season by opening your heart and home to others.

Assisting at a Local Food Bank: Fighting Hunger, Spreading Hope

Food insecurity is widespread throughout many communities, and 1 in 10 Arizonans struggles with hunger. The holiday season is an ideal time to get involved in hunger relief efforts. Organizations such as the Arizona Food Bank Network play a vital role in providing meals to those in need, and they often rely on volunteers to sort, pack and distribute food items.

Offering your time at a local food bank is one of the rewarding and practical ways to give back to the community. You can help ensure families struggling to put food on the table can enjoy a festive holiday meal. It’s a hands-on way to positively impact and bring a bit of hope to those facing difficult times.

Charitable Donations: Sharing the Blessings

Another powerful way to give back at Christmas is by making charitable donations. Charity Watch is a helpful resource in identifying organizations that will efficiently use your donation to fund the programs you want to support.

Whether it’s donating money, food, clothing or toys, your contributions can make a significant difference in the lives of others. Many organizations run holiday-specific donation drives, making it easy to get involved and support a cause close to your heart.

Consider cleaning your closets and donating gently used clothing and household items to a local shelter or thrift store. You can also contribute to food banks by purchasing non-perishable items to help families in need. Don’t forget the power of financial donations as well; they can provide much-needed resources to organizations doing valuable work in your community.

Memory care is a specialized form of long-term care designed to meet the unique needs of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other memory-related conditions. It provides a safe and structured environment where residents receive personalized care, support, and assistance with daily activities. In this article, we’ll delve into the essential aspects of memory care, including its purpose, services, and benefits.

Understanding the Need for Memory Care

Memory-related conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia can have a profound impact on an individual’s cognitive function and daily life. As these conditions progress, they often result in memory loss, confusion and behavioral changes that make it challenging for individuals to live independently or in traditional assisted living settings. Memory care communities are specifically designed to address these challenges and enhance the quality of life for residents.

The Key Components of Memory Care

Memory care communities offer a range of specialized services and features that distinguish them from other types of senior care settings. Let’s explore some of the key components:

1. Specialized Staffing

Memory care employees are trained to understand the unique needs of individuals with memory-related conditions. These caregivers have the expertise to provide appropriate assistance, manage medications, provide behavioral support, and offer activities that engage and stimulate residents.

2. Secure Environment

Safety is a top priority in memory care. Memory care communities are equipped with secure entrances and exits, monitoring systems, and features that prevent residents from wandering, a common concern among those with dementia. This helps reduce the risk of accidents and ensures residents remain safely within a controlled, comfortable environment.

3. Tailored Activities

Engaging activities are an integral part of memory care. These activities are designed to stimulate cognitive function, provide emotional support, and encourage social interaction among residents. Activities may include art therapy, music therapy, gardening, and more.

4. Medication Management

Many individuals with memory-related conditions require medication to manage symptoms. Memory care staff can administer medications as prescribed, ensuring residents receive their treatments on time and at the correct dosage.

5. Nutritional Support

Proper nutrition is crucial for maintaining the health and well-being of residents. Memory care communities offer balanced meals designed to meet the dietary needs of individuals with memory conditions, and assistance with feeding when necessary.

6. Personalized Care Plans

Each memory care resident has a personalized care plan tailored to their specific needs. These plans are developed through assessments conducted by healthcare professionals and are regularly updated to address changing requirements.

Choosing the Right Memory Care Community

When selecting a memory care community for a loved one, it’s essential to consider several factors:

1. Location and Accessibility

Choose a community that is conveniently located and easily accessible for family members and friends who wish to visit. Proximity to medical facilities is also important for day-to-day support as well as in emergencies.

2. Staff Expertise

Inquire about the qualifications and training of the memory care staff members. They should have expert experience in memory care and be equipped to handle the specific needs of residents.

3. Amenities and Activities

Explore the amenities and activities offered at the community. A variety of engaging activities and comfortable common areas can contribute to a higher quality of life for residents.

4. Reviews and Recommendations

Read reviews and seek recommendations from other families who have experience with the community. Their insights can provide valuable information about the quality of care provided.

A Final Thought On Memory Care

As a specialized form of long-term senior care, memory care is designed to meet the unique needs of individuals with dementia and other memory-related conditions. Choosing the right community involves careful consideration of location, staff expertise, amenities and reviews to ensure your loved one receives the best possible care and support during this challenging time.

A good memory care community offers a safe and supportive environment, specialized staff, engaging activities and personalized care plans to enhance the quality of life for residents. Here at Beatitudes Campus, we’ve collaborated with memory care experts to create our award-winning Comfort Matters® program. With a focus on flexibility, freedom and respect, the program provides a safe and nurturing space where care is infused with compassion and connection. Active aging is all about enthusiastically tackling life’s adventures, regardless of age. And boy, did we embrace it during Active Aging Week earlier this month. The Beatitudes Campus life enrichment team pulled out all the stops to host a lineup of lively activities and programs that embodied the spirit of living brightly and aging boldly – and residents dove headfirst into the fun.

What is active aging? It’s a lifestyle approach that encourages older adults to stay physically, mentally and socially engaged. It’s all about remaining vibrant and healthy by participating in various activities to maintain overall well-being. This can include regular exercise to keep the body strong, staying mentally sharp through activities like learning or puzzles, and participating in social interactions to foster community and purpose.

Active Aging Week at Beatitudes Campus was packed with six days of memorable and engaging experiences that left residents buzzing with excitement. The events provided entertainment and fostered a sense of community, reminding us that every day is an opportunity to savor life to the fullest.

Active Aging Week Highlights

Monday kicked off with Beatitudes Shirt Day, where residents proudly sported their favorite Beatitudes gear. The day was packed with music, trivia and a delicious continental breakfast. Afterward, residents got active with strength training, led by fitness specialist Mike, focusing on standing balance exercises. Laughter Yoga brought a contagious fit of giggles in the afternoon – a series of movement and breathing exercises designed to induce genuine laughter. Dean and Bonnie hosted some friendly basketball bouncing competitions, and Carole led a core and conditioning class for those seeking an advanced workout.

Tuesday saw residents donning their best cowboy duds for Western Wear Day. In the morning, resident Albert led a Chen Style Taiji Practical Method session, teaching practical martial applications and precise movements. Meanwhile, others took to the pool for invigorating water aerobics. Residents collaborated on a community art project in the Creative Corner: a rock snake installation. Afternoon highlights included line dancing, spirited dart games and a soothing yoga session.

Wednesday brought a playful Twin Day, where residents teamed up and dressed in tandem. They tested their song knowledge with a lively game of music bingo, singing along to their favorite tunes. In the afternoon, everyone gathered for an October town hall meeting to catch up on the latest news and community happenings. The “twins” had a chance to win fantastic raffle prizes, and the day concluded with a music jam session from the Beaded Lizard band.

Thursday had residents showing off their team spirit with Team Colors Day. The Beatitudes Campus Community Garden hosted an event, refreshing the garden beds and teaching residents how to plant individual pots for their patios. Other highlights included a musical performance by Bill Chase and a garden blessing by Chaplain Peggy.

Resident Sandy led Cards for Kindness, an initiative supported by CareCorp and the Community Outreach Committee that distributes handmade cards to health care centers in the Valley. Residents also explored volunteer opportunities on and off campus, engaged in group brain games on health-related topics, and honed their strength with hand and machine weights.

Friday encouraged residents to flaunt their preferred hues on Favorite Color Day. The day began with mobility and flexibility chair exercises, followed by a blindfolded taste test, where residents identified different foods for a chance to win a prize. In the afternoon, residents were treated to a Bridging the Generations concert featuring classic rock hits from The Beatles, Neil Diamond, Elvis, The Eagles, Fats Domino and more.

We wrapped up Saturday in style with Best Dressed Day. Green-thumbed residents started their day with the Garden Group, preparing garden beds for the upcoming November planting season while enjoying breakfast refreshments. The afternoon took a musical turn with a performance by the Cafe Flute Performers. Residents delved into the world of music, exploring different flutes and musical styles during this interactive session.

As the sun set, our Bistro came alive with the lively tunes of Igor and his special guests during the weekly Happy Hour Music event. Laughter and camaraderie filled the air as residents, staff and guests came together to enjoy the music and each other’s company.
